Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME universal extension is the sole TLD planned for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At first, solely 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domains remained running.
